According to a new United Nations report, global famine has reached a 10-year high.
Around 400 delegates from Asia and Africa gathered to discuss the findings during a high-level conference in Bangkok Wednesday.FILE – In this Oct. 1, 2018, photo, a malnourished boy sits on a hospital bed at the Aslam Health Center, Hajjah, Yemen. The study was conducted by five UN agencies, including the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture organization. Together, they found around 820 million people worldwide are malnourished and about 60-percent of those suffering from starvation live in the Asia-Pacific region.
During the conference, a UN official — who participated in the report– told delegates aggressive action is need to address this humanitarian crisis.
“We all need to make some radical changes to get our movement toward a ‘zero hunger’ world back on track.” — Kostas Stamoulis, representative for the United Nations Food and Agriculture
The conference was called to bring awareness to the crisis and for the countries involved to set a deadline to achieve “zero global hunger” by 2030.
