Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), who served as a White House doctor for 14 years, confirmed former President Donald Trump’s gunshot wound on Friday and announced that Trump is “rapidly recovering” from the July 13 assassination attempt and “doing extremely well.”
Sharing an update on the former president’s health with the American people on Friday, Jackson said that as a former White House physician who served under both Trump and former President Barack Obama, he understood the “global significance” of the assassination attempt against the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.
“The would-be assassin fired multiple rounds from a relatively close distance using a high-powered rifle, with one bullet striking the former President, and now the Republican Nominee for President, in his right ear,” Jackson stated. “I have reviewed President Trump’s medical records from Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was initially evaluated and treated for a ‘Gunshot Wound to the Right Ear.’”
The former White House physician explained that based on his “direct observations” of the injury, his medical background, and his experience treating gunshot wounds, he could “completely concur” with the Butler Memorial Hospital’s assessment of Trump’s gunshot wound.

Jackson’s comments stand in stark contrast to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray’s testimony to Congress during a Wednesday hearing. Wray claimed there was “some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel” that hit Trump’s ear during the assassination attempt by Thomas Matthew Crooks in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“There is absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than a bullet,” Jackson said. “Congress should correct the record as confirmed by both the hospital and myself. Director Wray is wrong and inappropriate to suggest anything else.”
Acknowledging the importance of the assassination attempt against Trump, Jackson added, “I want to reassure the American people and the rest of the world, that President Trump is doing extremely well. He is rapidly recovering from the gunshot wound to his right ear.”
At the conclusion of his update to the American people, Jackson said he would continue to help the former president and his personal physician in “any way they see fit” and would continue to provide additional updates on the former president’s condition with Trump’s permission.
