On Tuesday night, former president Donald Trump attacked his former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on his Truth Social platform, accusing her of spreading false poll results while making an appearance on Fox News.
‘Kayleigh ‘Milktoast’ McEnany recently misrepresented poll results on Fox News. He said, using his nickname for Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis while misusing the word “milquetoast,” “I am 34 points up on DeSanctimonious, not 25 up.”
“While 25 is great, it’s not 34. She knew the number was corrected upwards by the group that did the poll. The RINOS & Globalists can have her. FoxNews should only use REAL Stars!!!” Trump continued.
Milquetoast is a phrase used to describe someone who is weak or bland. It was inspired by the timid comic strip character Caspar Milquetoast, who was named after the comfort meal milk toast, in the 1920s. He has been called “the first snowflake.”
The position of White House press secretary was last held by former assistant McEnany, 35, in January 2021, when Trump’s presidency came to an end. April 2020 marked her first day.
Trump said he thought McEnany knew the accurate number but continued to spread false information before drawing the conclusion that she was associated with “RINOS & Globalists” and advising Fox News to only promote “REAL Stars.”
McEnany briefly mentioned recent Iowa polling during her appearance on the network’s program Outnumbered, which indicates DeSantis is closing the gap with the outgoing president since he formally declared his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination last week.
“The Desantis team would say we just had polling comes out that shows we closed the gap by nine points since we announced in Iowa. Still, Trump is hugely ahead but they say they are closing the gap. If you look at polling it was Trump 34 in Iowa and it’s now 25. That’s double-digits.”
Although the poll mentioned by Trump and McEnany was not named, a recent poll by Emerson College Polling indicates that Trump leads DeSantis by 42 points among Iowa voters.
While McEnany urged Trump to “pause” his presidential campaign in November, Trump accused McEnany of endorsing “DeSanctimonious” earlier this month.
Even people who had previously supported Trump were divided by his mockery of McEnany on social media.
‘Kayleigh is the kindest person and was the best press secretary to ever step foot in the White House. There is ZERO excuse for degrading or belittling her to this degree over a few points. I am upset, and at a loss for words. This erratic behavior is concerning,’ tweeted Kambree.
‘No sorry you’re wrong…it’s called draining the swamp. She has flipped for DeSantis! He was very good to her when she worked for him. She turned her back on him. Be better!’ responded Leelee.
‘Trump was making a bigger point. Fox is in the tank for DeSantis. Kayleigh has to tow the line even if that means fudging numbers that favor DeSantis. Kayleigh like most is not wealthy and has to work to survive. She cannot push back against Fox. That’s the problem. So she’s decided to give her allegiance to money under Fox,’ said JCHowell, taking Trump’s side.
‘He does this to everybody and this is why some people don’t like him. I wish he would just focus on what matters and stop getting distracted with insulting people. It only makes him look bad, not a good PR moment at all,’ IamChristy.
‘I wish Trump had not said that. I like her and believes she deserves better from her former boss,’ wrote Kevin Westerlaken.
DeSantis launched his presidential campaign in Iowa, holding a rally with supporters outside of Des Moines, knowing full well that he must win over Republican primary voters there if he hopes to defeat Trump in 2024.
He is starting a four-day campaign swing that also includes stops in South Carolina and New Hampshire.
In his first campaign remarks since announcing his candidacy last week, DeSantis came out swinging against President Joe Biden, Democratic policies, and took subtle shots at Donald Trump as he and wife Casey DeSantis shone in the state.
The governor of Florida noted the president’s son Hunter would already be in jail if he were a Republican as well as the overrun border, rising violence in Democratic cities, drug-out COVID-19 lockdowns, and Biden’s failed pullout from Afghanistan.
