Trump shoots down House speaker idea

It isn’t clear what the reason for Matt Gaetz’s announcement on Saturday at the Trump rally was about nominating President Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the House in 2023, but many posters on social media have been entertained by Democrats freaking out over the announcement- even though Trump shot the idea down again.

“Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden, and I’m going to nominate Donald J. Trump for speaker of the United States House of Representatives!” Gaetz said to the Georgia Save America-Trump rally audience Saturday night.

Gaetz said that he would nominate Trump after making comments similar on other platforms, and each time when questioned about the Gaetz comments, Trump has shot them down.

This was Gaetz on Saturday:

The Washington Examiner reported on the nights’ events:

“President Donald Trump says he has no interest in being speaker of the House despite staunch allies in the Republican Party promoting the idea. The political gambit has been proposed over the past year as a means by which Trump could lead an impeachment effort against President Joe Biden, most recently by Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz at Trump’s rally in Georgia over the weekend, but when pressed on it in a new interview, Trump said he’s got other plans in mind.”

“No, I think it’s not something I want to do. A lot of people bring it up. It’s brought up all the time. No, it’s not something I want to do. I want to look at what’s happening, and then we’re going to be doing something else. No, it’s not something I would be interested in,” he told Just the News founder John Solomon and Real America’s Voice correspondent Amanda Head at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Trump shook Gaetz’s hand after the announcement- and before thanking him and saying, “Well, that was interesting,” as if he had not expected the announcement from Gaetz.

The Washington Examiner reminded readers that the host of the popular War Room podcast, Steve Bannon, had made a similar statement to Gaetz’s. “The former White House chief strategist discussed the unprecedented scenario during an episode of his War Room podcast in August while criticizing Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal, they reported.

Every speaker thus far has been an elected House member, though they are not required to be.

Gaetz proposed at the rally that Trump take the job. “Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden, and I’m going to nominate Donald J. Trump for speaker of the United States House of Representatives!” Gaetz said.

Trump shook Gaetz’s hand before thanking him and saying, “Well, that was interesting.”

Also encouraging Trump to become the US House speaker before making an even more significant move, was Steve Bannon. The former White House chief strategist discussed the unprecedented scenario during an episode of his War Room podcast in August while criticizing Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal.

“Donald Trump should be elected the speaker of the House after [Republicans] have the sweeping victory in November ’22, at least for 100 days. Take the gavel from [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi, gavel him in, start the impeachment process. Then, in 100 days, punch out, and go run for president of the United States in 2024,” Bannon told War Room listeners.

Trump has not confirmed his plans for 2024 but if he was planning on running, it appears he has wide support. A new poll shows he has support that surpasses that of Biden as well as Vice President Kamala Harris if they were to face off in a matchup today.

According to a new Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey released exclusively to The Hill on Monday.

If the 2024 presidential election were held right now, the poll finds Trump getting 47 percent support compared to 41 percent for Biden. Twelve percent of voters are undecided.

Vice President Harris performs even worse in a hypothetical match-up with Trump. Forty-nine percent said they would choose Trump, while 38 percent said they would support Harris.
