Trump is target of new DOJ Jan. 6 criminal probe, says he expects arrest, indictment

Former President Donald Trump said he is the target of another Department of Justice criminal investigation, this time over the Capitol storming on January 6, 2021.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump accused President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice and Attorney General Merrick Garland of election interference by going after Biden’s “NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT.”

“Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before, or even close,” Trump said, adding, “THIS WITCH HUNT IS ALL ABOUT ELECTION INTERFERENCE AND A COMPLETE AND TOTAL POLITICAL WEAPONIZATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT! It is a very sad and dark period for our Nation!”

Trump was indicted earlier this year on 37 felony charges relating to how he handled classified documents.

The 49-page indictment states that Trump’s charges include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, corruptly concealing documents or records, and making false statements.

The Justice Department alleges that Trump mishandled classified records “regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries; United States nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack” by removing them from the White House in January 2021.

Trump decried the indictment on this social media platform Truth Social, writing that this “isn’t America anymore.”

“Biden moved his Boxes all over the place, including to Chinatown and up to his lawyer’s office in Boston. Why isn’t deranged Jack Smith looking at that? Also, I supplied them openly, and without question, security tape from Mar-a-Lago. I had nothing to hide, nor do I now. Nobody said I wasn’t allowed to look at the personal records that I brought with me from the White House. There’s nothing wrong with that….” Trump wrote.

This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.
