The Trump administration levels new sanctions against three Latin American governments, accusing the nations’ leaders of engaging in undemocratic practices.

The new sanctions target gold sales from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua with National Security Adviser John Bolton labeling the countries “the troika of tyranny.”

“We will no longer appease dictators and despots near our shores,” said Bolton. We will not reward firing squads torturers and murderers. We will champion the independence and liberty of our neighbors. And this president and his entire administration will stand with the freedom fighters. The troika of tyranny in this hemisphere Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua has finally met its match.”

Bolton added the State Department would further sanction dozens of Cuban organizations with ties to the Cuban government and military.
