The new migrant caravan from Central America has crossed Mexico’s southern border, marking a milestone in its mission to reach the United States.
On Thursday, Mexican authorities said nearly 1000 migrants crossed into Ciudad Hidalgo, where they began the process to obtain humanitarian visas.
President Trump responded to the reports ofthe new wave of migrants this week, saying its proof that Congress needs to fund the border wall as soon as possible.
However, migrants in the caravan fired back at the president Thursday by saying they deserve to be let in.
“Donald Trump’s heart should soften up and see that we battle to get to where we are, and all the walking — we suffer on the way and we hope for the best for our people,” stated Honduran migrant Rodolfo Matias.
Other migrants complained to reporters, saying they need to go to the U..S because there are no jobs in Central America. Reports have indicated that activist groups like ‘People Without Borders” have been misleading poor people in countries like Guatemala by promising them that if they reach the U.S. then they will be able to get asylum easily, and there will be jobs and a new life waiting for them.
President Trump slammed Central American governments this week for doing nothing to stop the these groups from organizing and flooding the U.S. border.
As of Thursday, there were around 700 additional migrants from the caravan still waiting to cross into Mexico. In the meantime, thousands of their countrymen from the previous caravans are still waiting at the U.S. border as their claims are processed, while hundreds more have decided to skip the wait by crossing illegally.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to lead a delegation to Mexico later this month to discuss tackling the mass migration crisis.
