NAFTA Negotiations with Mexico Going Great

The Trump administration is set to announce a breakthrough with Mexico on NAFTA negotiations Thursday.

The so-called “handshake deal” comes after months of talks between the U.S. and its southern neighbor.

The announcement is also expected to include details on when Canadian officials will return to Washington for talks.

Mexico’s economy minister has said Canada must be part of the deal, although President Trump has floated the idea of separate bilateral agreements.

“Let me frame it very clearly: what we are doing here is trying to get resolved the issues the issues that are most important between the U.S. and Mexico, stated Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo. “That would lead to a trilateral meeting with Canada — I think the handshake happens when everybody is done.”

Mexican officials have been pushing for a new deal before the new Mexican Congress takes office on Saturday, September 1.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative said there are still “major issues outstanding” in negotiations.
