Macy’s and others will be sorry that they dropped Trump

If you’re in business and you work with the general public, one thing you want to do is keep your eyes and ears out for what’s hot. Especially in the retail business. If the country is going gaga over something, you want to make sure that you give the public what they want. That’s just the way it works in America. We’re a very trendy nation and when we get excited about something we spend money.

When Donald Trump made his announcement speech, he did it pretty much off-the-cuff. He wasn’t reading from any teleprompters. And he didn’t have the politically correct board of directors filtering his statements. And with Donald, sometimes his brain works faster than his mouth. He doesn’t always say things in the proper order. And he thinks of five or six things while he’s saying something else. So he said a few disparaging things about illegal Mexicans that didn’t set right with a lot of people. The press made sure that it sounded worse than it really was. And before you knew it, pressure was somehow put on Macy’s and other companies to drop their association with the Trump brand.

Overnight the Trump brand was dropped by Macy’s. Other companies soon followed and the press made sure that these decisions were public knowledge. They jumped on  anything negative about Donald Trump. But Donald Trump didn’t seem to care. In several of his speeches, he noted that people told him they were cutting up their Macy’s cards. When Univision cancelled the Miss America Pagent – he sued. And there was at least some backlash to the Macy’s decision by his supporters. But even still, the list of companies trying to move away  from the Trump brand continued to grow. These companies probably assumed that they would benefit from the publicity of distancing themselves from what they thought would soon be an unpopular public figure. If they could have seen the avalanche of support that Donald Trump has received after making several more controversial statements, I wonder if they would have made the same decisions. And it could get worse for them.

Tomorrow Donald Trump is going to take center stage in what will probably be the most-watched Republican primary debate in history. He is already hot. But if he has a good showing during the debate, and chances are he will, he will be hotter than the proverbial firecracker. And Donald, never one to miss an opportunity, will no doubt double down as he uses the increase in public awareness to expand his brand even more.

Carrying Donald’s ties may not make or break Macy’s. But if his popularity grows to even more heights, they might wish that they hadn’t been so quick to drop his line. It could be that soon anything with the Trump name on it will be in high demand and American will pay top dollar to get their hands on Trump stuff. Macy’s may not only morn the loss of revenue, but it may turn out that they could become infamous for dissing the president of the United States of America.

Update: NorthJersey.com is reporting that Macy’s is still not getting it. Trump shirts priced at 65% off. Idiots!
