Ivanka Trump picked independent legal representation in a lawsuit being brought by the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, prompting Lara Trump to try to put to rest allegations that there is a divide in the former first family.
The former president Donald Trump, along with his three eldest children, Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka, are accused in a lawsuit filed by James in September of inflating the property values of the Trump Organization and associated businesses in order to secure more affordable loans.
The attorney general is seeking $250 million in damages and the Trumps’ exclusion from conducting business in New York.
According to Forbes, Clifford Robert and Michael Farina were engaged by Don Jr. and Eric last October to represent them in the dispute. Shortly after, the attorneys told the court that they would now be representing Ivanka.
But on March 6, a different lawyer for Ivanka issued a letter to the judge requesting that the trial be postponed.
In the letter he stated, “The complaint does not contain a single allegation that Ms. Trump directly or indirectly created, prepared, reviewed or certified any of her father’s financial statements. The complaint affirmatively alleges that other individuals were responsible for those tasks.”
In other words, the attorney was indicating that Ivanka would likely provide a different case than her brothers.
Then, Bennet Moskowitz informed the court last week that he was taking over as Ivanka’s legal representative in the lawsuit and that Robert and Farina would no longer be helping to represent her.
In response to Ivanka’s choice, Lara Trump, Eric’s wife, told the U.K. Daily Mail, “I think people are trying to make that a bigger deal than it really is.”
“It’s not common to have to go through all this stuff that my husband and his siblings go through,” she added. “They’ve had a series of different attorneys throughout this entire process and it just so happened that Ivanka felt closer to one, gravitated towards that [one].”
“She [may have] said, ‘I’m going to have this person directly for me,’ but [the attorneys] all work as a team. I think that got lost in the story,” Lara said.
Lara was questioned by The Daily Mail if she and Ivanka ever get together considering they both reside in southeast Florida.
“We do,” Lara responded.
Ivanka has made it clear that she has no plans to support former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, in contrast to Lara.
She released a statement in November when he declared his campaign, saying, “I love my father very much. This time around, I’m choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family.”
“I do not plan to be involved in politics. While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena,” the former first daughter added.
Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner served as top advisers in the Trump White House and were engaged during the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.
Rumors and palace intrigue are an integral aspect of political life.
Ivanka’s choice of legal representation seems to be primarily motivated by her desire to have a lawyer entirely dedicated to her case, who will likely be distinct from her father’s or brothers’.
There’s no reason to interpret it as a family conflict.
