Most people in the Anglosphere have contentedly lived their lives without being aware of Ruby Wax. The American-born comedienne has been a staple on the BBC since the early 1990s, hosting (or “presenting,” in Britisher-speak) a number of shows for the U.K.’s public broadcaster. Britishers, though, aren’t nearly as fortunate.
However, the 70-year-old will most likely be remembered in the rest of the world as the person who was kicked off of Donald Trump’s jet for making fun of him when he declared his desire to run for president in the 1990s.
On Wednesday’s episode of Kate Garraway’s ITV chat program, Wax repeated the tale. Garraway is just another odd British media flibbertigibbet you’re better off not knowing about, in case you’re curious.
In the interview, Wax said that the subjects of her show would divulge “really personal things” during meals that she wouldn’t bring up during the actual interview.
However, things didn’t quite turn out that way while having dinner with Trump.
“Donald — you know, when a man treats you like an idiot, you kind of become an idiot,” Wax said. “Because he knows females, because he just has sex with them. But he couldn’t figure me out. He really was so fierce and so vicious. He said, ‘You’re angry with a smile.’ So he got me, because I was backed into a corner.”
“He did say, ‘I want to be the next president of the United States,’ and I thought it was a joke,” she continued. “I thought, ‘What a sense of humor this guy has.’ So I started laughing.’ And he said, ‘That’s it, I want her off the flight.’
“So we only got to 33,000 feet and we went straight back down again. It’s not a good show.”
Wax has told the tale before, so this isn’t the first time. After she laughed in his face about his presidential ambitions on “Good Morning Britain” in 2017, she said that Trump “wouldn’t speak” to Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins.
“So my crew and I landed and we were stuck in Arkansas with nowhere to go,” she said, according to the U.K.’s Mirror. “We ended up finding him in Nebraska judging a Miss Nebraska contest.”
Trump considered running for president in the Reform Party in 2000, back when Ross Perot’s baby was taken seriously by American voters. However, he ultimately lost the election to Barack Obama in 2016, as those of you not just waking up from an eight-year coma will no doubt recall.
Of course, when Trump made his declaration at the time, comedians continued to laugh in his face.
Do you recall Jon Stewart’s joke when Trump was elected? Then-“Daily Show” host, who was finishing up his final six weeks in the position at the time, reportedly quipped, “There’s a crazy person running for president,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Huckabee-Santorum apparently didn’t go far enough.
Stewart concluded by thanking Trump for making his last six weeks the finest of his life, referring to him as “America’s id” in his final statement: “Thank you, Donald Trump, for making my last six weeks my best six weeks. He is putting me in some kind of comedy hospice.”
