Recently released White House documents are shedding light on years of U.S. meddling with Russia’s politics.
The transcripts of communications between former President Bill Clinton and his Russian counterpart Boris Yeltsin confirm the warm ties between the two. The documents also detail the rise to power of current Russia president Vladimir Putin.
“The U.S. doesn’t just interfere in elections, it overthrows governments it doesn’t like,” stated Noam Chomsky, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “The U.S. government under Clinton intervened quite blatantly and openly and tried to conceal it to get their man Yeltsin in.”
The White House transcripts reveal Clinton greatly helped Yeltsin remain in power throughout the 1990’s. In the Russian elections of ’93 and ’96, Clinton provided Yeltsin with massive financing and other aid to help the Russian president and his allies remain in power.
The documents show Yeltsin managed to convince Clinton that if the U.S. didn’t support the Kremlin then the communist party of Russia would rise to power and challenge the U.S.
After strengthening his political positions with the help from the U.S., Yeltsin informed Clinton he would install Vladimir Putin as his successor. Clinton appeared to be delighted with the news, saying Putin is very smart.
These disclosures fall in line with recent reports of collusion between Democrat lawmakers and Putin.
Congressional investigators found oligarch and Putin ally — Oleg Deripaska — played a role in crafting the Trump dossier, which some alleged could help Hillary Clinton get elected in 2016. This might suggest Putin could be returning a favor to whom the White House documents call “his partner” — Bill Clinton.
“What really is the truth is that Deripaska, for most of the last 10 year as a Russian businessman, was cooperating with the FBI — assisting them on many different fronts,” said John Solomon, opinion contributor for The Hill.
The Kremlin has since expressed regret over the publication of the Clinton-Yeltsin transcripts.
