Bolton says Biden’s Iran concessions on ‘verge of treason’

Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor John Bolton said this week that concessions President Joe Biden may be making with Iran are borderline treason.

Bolton — who supported then-President Trump’s 2018 decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal — on Wednesday criticized the Biden administration’s efforts to negotiate the U.S. return to the 2015 deal, the Washington Times reported.

Bolton addressed reports that said in order to be allowed back into the Iran deal, Biden would have to agree to a provision penalizing the U.S. if it ever again left the deal.

“One is this idea of damages — that if a subsequent administration withdrew from the deal, they’d have to pay damages to Iran,” Bolton said. That’s been reported in the press in the past couple of weeks.”

“If the Biden administration negotiated those kinds of provisions to harm the United States of America if a future president withdrew from the deal, that verges on treasonous,” Bolton said.

Bolton further claimed, “There were earlier reports weeks and months ago of a proposition that Iran would be put back in possession of enriched uranium that it may have shipped out to Russia or other countries.”

In his Wednesday remarks, Bolton said a future Republican presidential administration would likely try to throw out whatever deal the Biden administration is currently negotiating with Iran.

Bolton has avowed his hawkish views on Iran for years. In his 2020 White House memoir, “The Room Where it Happened,” he described his disappointment after Trump allegedly canceled a planned military strike on Iranian targets. According to Haaretz, Bolton described that decision as “one of the most unprofessional decisions he had ever witnessed in his career in national security.”

In his book, Bolton also described working with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scuttle Trump’s own talks with Iran.

While it’s not clear that Biden has offered to give enriched uranium to Iran as Bolton claimed, lawmakers and former state department officials have raised other allegations about Biden’s potential Iran deal concessions.

In March, a former State Department official said Biden administration negotiators were discussing dropping a terrorism designation against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other sanctions to help move negotiations forward.

In April, an Iranian admiral publicly said Iran repeatedly rejected the Biden administration’s requests that Iran stop seeking revenge for Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani’s death in exchange for easing sanctions.

Last Month, several Republican senators alleged the U.S. Department of Justice under Biden was delaying terrorism investigations against Iran to help negotiations continue.

Biden is also facing mounting pressure to block Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi from visiting New York after the DOJ did charge an IRGC officer with trying to hire assassins to kill Bolton and Pompeo.
