A new survey shows former President Donald Trump beating President Joe Biden by 7 points in a potential 2024 presidential race rematch.
According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, nearly half of Americans said they would “definitely” or “probably” vote for Trump, or are leaning toward voting for him, in a matchup against Biden.
The poll showed just 42 percent would “definitely” or “probably” vote for Biden, or are leaning toward voting for him if his opponent is Trump once again.
Trump also topped Biden when respondents were asked about each candidate’s physical health. Sixty-four percent said Trump is in “good enough physical health to serve effectively as president,” compared to 33 percent who said the same about Biden.
Most respondents also agreed that Trump is has the “mental sharpness” to serve as president, whereas just 32 percent of respondents said Biden does.
The survey had a sample size of 1,006 American adults and a 3.5 percent margin of error. It was conducted between April 26 and May 3.
“This poll is just brutal for President Biden,” host George Stephanopoulos said on ABC. “President Trump, at least right now, appears to be strengthening his hold on his front-runner status for the Republican nomination.”
In the wake of his indictment in New York, several polls showed Trump ahead of his Republican rivals, particularly Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, in the 2024 presidential.
A Yahoo News/YouGov poll found Trump leading DeSantis by his widest-ever margin after the indictment, according to Yahoo News. Trump’s lead over DeSantis jumped 18 points in the poll.
The former president led DeSantis by 26 percentage points in the poll, compared to an only eight-percentage-point lead only two weeks prior.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that about 48 percent of self-described Republicans wanted Trump to be the party’s nominee. That’s up from 44 percent in a poll from mid-March, prior to his March 30 indictment, Reuters reported.
