Trade Agreement With Canada Could Be Coming Soon

The U.S and Canada are holding trade talks in Washington, where officials are negotiating a replacement for NAFTA.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is meeting with U.S Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer with the discussions expected to focus on dairy tariffs.

President Trump has previously criticized Canada on the matter. He said for a deal to happen, Canada must reduce its tariffs on dairy and abolish a dairy system that tracks supply management.

Before Wednesday’s talks, Freeland expressed her optimism ahead of the meeting.

“We’ve already been having some meetings today and this morning,” she stated. “I’ve already been speaking to Ambassador Lighthizer on the phone and our officials are already working very hard…engaging with the U.S.”

The U.S. is imposing a Friday deadline for Canada to enter the new trilateral trade deal.

The meeting comes just two days after President Trump announced a bilateral trade deal between the U.S. and Mexico.
