Video: Trump ‘restoring’ military base names changed by Biden admin

President Donald Trump announced during a Tuesday speech at Fort Bragg that his administration will be “restoring” the names of multiple U.S. Army bases that were changed under former President Joe Biden’s administration.

During Tuesday’s speech at Fort Bragg, Trump said, “For a little breaking news, we are also going to be restoring the names to Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort A.P. Hill, and Fort Robert E. Lee.”

“We won a lot of battles out of those forts,” the 47th president added. “It’s no time to change. And I’m superstitious. You know, I like to keep it going, right? I’m very superstitious. We want to keep it going.”

According to Fox News, Fort Robert E. Lee, Fort Pickett, Fort Gordon, Fort Hood, Fort Rucker, Fort A.P. Hill, and Fort Polk were all renamed in 2023 by the Pentagon under the Biden administration. The Biden administration’s implementation of the fort name changes came after Congress approved the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, which prevented the Department of Defense from naming military bases after former Confederate leaders and established the Congressional Naming Commission to provide name change recommendations.

CBS News reported that the Trump administration’s restoration of the military base names will now honor other service members with the same names instead of the Confederate leaders the bases were originally named after.

Following Trump’s announcement on Tuesday, the Army released a statement, saying, “The Army will take all necessary actions to change the names of seven Army installations in honor of heroic Soldiers who served in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Battle of Mogadishu. Five of them received the Medal of Honor, three received the Distinguished Service Cross and one received the Silver Star.”

The Army’s press release added, “The Secretary of the Army will take immediate action to implement these redesignations, which are in accordance with Section 1749(a) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020.”

Earlier this year, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the Army to restore the original name of Fort Bragg in North Carolina following the Biden administration’s decision to rename the U.S. base to Fort Liberty.

According to CBS News, the Trump administration also restored the name of Georgia’s Fort Benning after the Biden administration renamed the military base to Fort Moore. The outlet noted that both Fort Bragg and Fort Benning now honor non-Confederate military members with the names Bragg and Benning.
