On Monday, former President Donald Trump responded to the United States Supreme Court’s ruling that stated Trump cannot be removed from 2024 presidential ballots. The high court’s decision thwarted Colorado’s attempt kick Trump off the ballot due to his alleged “insurrection” related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol storming.
“BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Shortly after posting his initial reaction, Trump gave televised remarks from his home in Palm Beach, Florida.
“It was a very important decision. I think it will go a long way toward bringing our country together, which our country needs,” Trump said in response to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision. “While most states were thrilled to have me, there were some that didn’t, and they didn’t want that for political reasons.”
The U.S. Supreme Court’s unsigned ruling, issued early Monday with no dissenting opinions, was made in response to the Colorado Supreme Court’s 4-3 decision made late last year, which held “that Trump is disqualified from holding the office of president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.”
“Because the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates, we reverse,” the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling argued. “We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency.”
According to The Associated Press, the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision was the first time a presidential candidate was temporarily disqualified under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
