A new poll shows that young Americans ages 18-34 may be shifting their support from President Joe Biden to former President Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election.
The new Axios and Generation Lab poll suggests that Trump may be closing the gap in young voter support, as 52% of 18-34-year-old Americans said they would vote for Biden and 48% of young Americans said they would vote for Trump if the 2024 election were held right now. Biden’s support among young Americans increased to 59% when only survey respondents who said they were definitely going to vote in November’s election were polled.
The Axios and Generation Lab poll was conducted between February 3 and February 14 with 1,073 18-34-year-olds from across the United States. According to the poll, the majority of survey respondents indicated that the economy was their top issue.
“We don’t know enough yet,” Neil O’Brian, a University of Oregon political scientist, said. “But this idea that young people are gonna keep populating into the Democratic Party? There are some question marks around that.”

According to Axios, “Generation Z” and “Millennial” voters were crucial in Biden’s 2020 election victory, with record numbers of young Americans participating in the election. A Pew Research Center analysis of the election showed that young Americans favored Biden over Trump by roughly 20 percentage points in 2020.
In December, a New York Times and Siena College poll showed that Trump had increased his favorability with young American voters, as 49% of voters ages 18-29 indicated that they would vote for Trump and only 43% of young American voters indicated they would vote for Biden.
“I’m incredibly disappointed by how old [the candidates] are,” 25-year-old David Place told Axios. Place, who is planning to vote for Trump in the 2024 election, added, “I will say that Biden’s age and the way it affects him is way more apparent to people than Trump’s.”
