Mike Gill, the former Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s chief of staff under former President Donald Trump’s administration, was shot in a series of carjacking incidents in Washington, D.C., on Monday night. The carjacking suspect was later shot and killed by police in Maryland on Tuesday.

In a statement to The Daily Wire, Erica Richardson, a spokeswoman for Gill’s family, said, “We can confirm that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block of K Street Northwest on Monday evening and is in critical condition. Out of respect for the family, we have nothing additional to add at this time.”

According to The Daily Wire, Gill was transported to the hospital in critical condition after being shot around 5:45 p.m. on Monday while picking up his wife in downtown Washington, D.C.

The Washington Post reported that after shooting the former Trump administration official, the suspect is believed to have been involved in two carjacking incidents and a third attempted carjacking incident. One of the incidents led to the death of a carjacking victim.

According to The Washington Post, police indicated that the suspect entered Gill’s vehicle while it was parked, shot the former Trump official, and ran away from the scene while Gill collapsed outside of his vehicle.

In a statement to Fox 5, Gill’s family wrote, “Mike is an amazing husband, father, friend and colleague. He has a wonderful sense of humor, no matter the situation. He makes friends with everyone – and is always looking for opportunities to bring people together and make them feel included and loved. His warmth and kindness have touched the lives of many, evident in the outpouring of love and support his family has have received during this difficult time.”

Fox 5 reported that police believe the unidentified suspect later attempted to steal a vehicle at roughly 7 p.m. near the 1000 block of 3rd Street. Approximately 10 minutes later, the suspect shot a man and stole his vehicle. The victim later died from his fatal wound at a local hospital.

The suspect is believed to have later shot at a D.C. police officer on I-295, as well as a Maryland State Police trooper on I-95. The suspect was fatally shot on Tuesday by a New Carrollton police officer in Lanham during a confrontation between the suspect and law enforcement.

While the suspect’s identity has not yet been released, police have indicated that the man had a minor criminal history in Maryland and Washington, D.C., according to Fox 5. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate Monday’s string of carjacking incidents.
