Former President Donald Trump criticized the United States’ plan to send top-of-the-line tanks to Ukraine on Thursday, calling the fight against the Russian invasion a “crazy war.”
In his latest criticism of aid to Ukraine, Trump repeated a Russian talking point that sending Abrams M1 tanks would be an escalation that could lead to nuclear war.
Trump wrote on his social media site, “FIRST COME THE TANKS, THEN COME THE NUKES.” “Stop this crazy war RIGHT AWAY. So easy to do!”
Trump, who called Putin a “genius” when he invaded Ukraine last year, has been skeptical of the West’s efforts to protect Ukraine for a long time.
President Joe Biden has been leading the charge to help Kyiv, but Trump and his allies have asked the U.S. many times to stop sending money to the troubled country.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., agreed with what Trump said and called aid to Ukraine a “corrupt slush fund” without going into more detail.
Greene wrote on her official congressional Twitter account, “We must stop giving money to Ukraine.” “We need to stop this war.”
Without help from the U.S. and its allies, it’s likely that Ukraine wouldn’t be able to get Russian troops out of its own land. This would let Russia keep the occupied land for good.
Biden has said that the West won’t change its mind about helping Ukraine defend itself. To stop Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war, the president has given billions of dollars in military and economic aid, with the help of NATO allies.
Trump’s attack comes after Vice President Biden said that the U.S. will send 31 Abrams M1 tanks to Ukrainian forces as part of a new promise to Kyiv.
Germany also agreed to give Ukraine 14 high-tech Leopard 2 battle tanks and gave permission for up to 88 more to be sent by other European countries.
Britain, Poland, the Netherlands, and Sweden are among the countries that have sent or said they will send hundreds of tanks and heavy armored vehicles to Ukraine to help defend it as it enters a new phase of the war and tries to break through Russian lines that have been set up for a long time.
